Points of Interest

Descussatio means intersection in Latin (intersection.com was taken). I have been thinking for some time about the intersection of ideas, the floating chaotic Venn diagram in my head. Sometimes I am troubled, other times blessed, by the weird connections driven by my range of interests. A quick example …. I am in the finance and was writing a paper about the horrid performance of value investing. I looked up at my bookshelf and saw a copy of Is God Happy, a collection of essays by the philosopher Leczek Kolakowski. I bought this book some time ago, made several attempts to climb in, and was rebuffed each time. Too much for an amateur. I pulled it off the shelf, perused the table on contents, looking for the shortest possible essay. “Is There a Future for Truth” was it. Yes there is according to Kolakowski, as rational beings will always want truth to be grounded in absolutes. As it is with investing, at the end of the day investors will want the value of their holdings grounded in financial absolutes. Metaphysical Finance.

These are the kinds of observations and connections I would like to pursue on this blog. We will see how it goes – I am nearly 65 and may burn out soon.
